We interviewed Brandon and Selwyn, two of our own group members, about their different experiences learning their heritage languages of Farsi and Spanish, respectively. Brandon's parents spoke both English and Farsi at home, so Brandon grew up speaking both languages. On the other hand, Selwyn only spoke Spanish at home and his first experiences with English came in the classroom. They both discuss why they believe their parents decided to teach us our languages in the way they did and how that affects how they relate and connect to their cultures as second generation immigrants. They also speak about the extent to which they are proficient in their languages as well as what languages they prefer speaking with.
